Green Bay Packers: 10 2019 draft prospects to know
5. Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
The Packers used a second-round pick on a safety (Josh Jones) just two seasons ago. Unfortunately, Jones failed to beat out Brice for a starting spot in training camp and the competition wasn’t even that close. That leaves the Packers to try again.
The last time they drafted a safety out of Alabama (Clinton-Dix) the results were luke-warm. However, Deionte Thompson could be the answers to all the Packers’ questions. Thompson’s stats don’t do him justice as he has only recorded 45 tackles and two interceptions in his career. The tape is much friendlier to him.
Thompson is one of, if not THE, top safety in the 2019 draft class. He is equal parts enforcer and coverage safety, showing an ability to play near the line of scrimmage, yet play center field in coverage. If Thompson can get more comfortable as a safety and show quicker decision making, he could vault even higher up draft boards.
