Green Bay Packers: Five toughest cuts in 2018
4. CB Josh Hawkins
Hawkins’ name was a tough one to see pop up on the cut list. When injuries hit the Packers’ secondary hard in 2017, Hawkins was one of the players called upon to step up. He played the third highest number of snaps among Green Bay’s corners with 403.
After playing 26 games over the last two seasons, many thought he had a good shot to remain with the team. Hawkins played in 15 games last season with three starts totaling 37 tackles and six pass deflections.
The Packers kept six corners with the most surprising one being Herb Waters. Waters is an ex-receiver converted to corner and has yet to play in an NFL game. He stuck around on the Packers’ practice squad in 2016 before going on IR for a shoulder injury in 2017. Waters is probably glad he didn’t jump ship because Green Bay never gave up on his development.
They must have liked his length over Hawkins given his two-inch height advantage. Waters’ best play came when he intercepted a pass in the end zone of the preseason finale against the Chiefs.
