Green Bay Packers: 5 reasons why they are Super Bowl contenders
4. Running back tandem
Last season, then rookies Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones gave the Packers hope for the future while Ty Montgomery was nursing his rib injury.
Williams finished the season with 153 carries rushing for 556 yards and 3.6 per attempt. Jones ran 81 times last season and accounted for 448 yards which was 5.5 yards per carry. Obviously both will have higher expectations entering year two.
Although Montgomery’s 2017 season was cut short, he has proven how valuable he is out of the backfield. His versatility as a receiver and a runner helps make the Packers offense all the more dangerous.
In terms of how all three gel together, there’s no reason at all why there shouldn’t be fresh legs on the field at all times. Each one of the three backs are able to work an entire drive on their own, let alone splitting the carries up a little more. Doing so will help each of them stay fresh longer and can potentially help limit injures as all three of them dealt with some sort of injury last season.
Again, the best aspect about this group is that the rotations don’t simply mean throwing fresh legs out on the field. It means throwing fresh, reliable and talented legs on the field. Not many teams across the league can say that about two, let alone three of their running backs.
Having Montgomery, Williams and Jones also takes the eyes off of Rodgers and company a little more. Defenses will be forced to play more honest if each of the three backs can perform as advertised. And with that, these three help the Packers become Super Bowl contenders.
