1. McCarthy vs Running Backs

The running back position is certainly one to keep an eye on with three talented runners in Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery. However, the more interesting battle will include McCarthy and how he chooses to use this trio.

In the past, McCarthy has relied on the hot hand at running back, often causing his team to become too predictable. If he’s smart and adaptable like he says, he’ll look to other teams to figure out how to use three talented but very different backs. The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles are two good places to start.

Given the different skillset of each back, McCarthy would be wise to create packages around each player. This doesn’t mean every time Montgomery is in the game he’s going to go out for a pass, but it does mean McCarthy can mold his packages to maximize the talent at the position.

Watching McCarthy and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin figure it out will be a treat to watch during training camp and into preseason. All three backs certainly deserve to touch the ball throughout the game and McCarthy will surely try to make that happen.
