The Green Bay Packers kicked off their Training Camp on Thursday. Let’s check in on four big things including wide receivers making some plays.

The Green Bay Packers training camp kicked off with Day 1 on Thursday. Although it was a lot of fun to get back to football, we always have to be cautious when noting what happens during these events. It’s easy to overreact one way or the other and make sweeping assumptions based on a few practices (or just one in this case).

Now that we’ve noted the cautious approach, let’s dive in with some observations that were made and 4 big things we should take away from Day 1.

Different mindset on defense

For years, the Packers’ defense has lacked players who show emotion on the field. Sometimes, this lack of emotion translated to a lack of energy. And no matter how much Mike Daniels tried, he couldn’t get his teammates to pick up that level.

However, that should begin to change this season with the addition of Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator. Also, having guys such as Josh Jones and Jaire Alexander (two of the best crap-talkers) doesn’t hurt either. Regardless, look for this to carry over to the rest of the team resulting in a much more rejuvenated unit in 2018.

Marcedes Lewis gets old number back

Marcedes Lewis wasn’t able to get his No. 89 jersey when he signed with Green Bay thanks to wide receiver Michael Clark already holding that down. So when Clark’s retirement was announced yesterday, Lewis wasted little time in claiming his new number and showed off his jersey at training camp on Thursday.

Will Tramon Williams be in the slot?

The Packers spent their top two picks in the 2018 NFL Draft on cornerbacks in Alexander and Joshua Jackson. Given their addition, along with the signing of Tramon Williams, the cornerback position has a lot more talent than last year. Still, there are questions about how the playing time will be divided.

At first thought, Kevin King and Tramon Williams would lock down the outside spots with Alexander moving to the slot. However, it started out a bit differently on Thursday. Williams actually moved to the slot with King and veteran Davon House starting on the outside. This is most likely a message to the rookies, informing them nothing is guaranteed in this league. It’s certainly worth keeping an eye on as the camp progresses.

J’Mon Moore and Trevor Davis turn heads

Another position rookies will unquestionably have an impact on is the wide receiver spot. Green Bay spent three mid-round picks to help fill in for the loss of Jordy Nelson who was cut in the offseason. After one day, it appears J’Mon Moore and Trevor Davis are ready to show out.

Each receiver had their moment on Day 1 and maybe got out to an early lead for receiver No. 3 on the depth chart. Davis possesses great speed and can hopefully learn to utilize that as a weapon unlike in year’s past. Moore has great height and can be another red zone target for Aaron Rodgers. Keep an eye on these two moving forward.
