4. Safety battle

Former general manager Ted Thompson was great at thinking ahead of the game. He was rarely caught off guard when they lost a player in free agency, always seemingly having a plan in place. Thus was the case when he used a 2017 second round pick on Josh Jones. With Morgan Burnett signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season, Thompson once again was on the mark.

Jones will be given every opportunity to prove he can play safety in the NFL. He had a few moments where he flashed potential last season, but that was far and few in between.

Kentrell Brice is another talented player at safety, but has shown an extreme lack of understanding about the game. Will the two of them together be enough to hold their own? If not, there are a number of starting caliber safeties remaining on the free agency market that Gutekunst can go out and get. It’s something worth keeping any eye on as training camp progresses.
