Green Bay Packers: Which positions need more depth?
2. Outside Linebacker.
Current depth chart: Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Vince Biegel, Kyler Fackrell, Reggie Gilbert
Matthews’ disgruntles might be justified.
Green Bay ranked in the middle of the pack last season with 37 sacks as a team. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst hasn’t done much this offseason to make us believe things will get better. Outside of bringing in defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, no outside linebackers were signed to improve the pass rush. The Packers also opted out on using a high draft pick to address the position. Instead, they are hoping Fackrell, Biegel, and Gilbert can collectively provide pressure off the edge on a revolving basis.
If Pettine is not confident in the players behind Matthews and Perry, that means they will be taking a bulk of the snaps. Typically, more reps would be welcomed by most players but the 32-year old Matthews is prone to fatigue injuries.
