Pro: Great trade value

After making what most people consider to be a lopsided trade with the Saints on Day 1 and then getting great value trading back up with Seattle to get Jaire Alexander, Gutekunst did it again here with Burks. Trading picks 101 and 147 to the Carolina Panthers, the Packers move back into the third round and still maintain eight picks on Day 3, including the first pick in the fifth round.

Using the Trade Value Chart on Drafttek, the Packers got 150 value points with the 88th pick, giving up 128.2 points on Day 3. That 21.8 point difference is a good deal for the Packers and as far as the value goes, is a net positive.

Getting an athletic linebacker like Burks only adds on to it. There isn’t likely to be another front seven prospect with is speed and explosiveness available on Day 3 except Shaquem Griffin, who the Panthers may very well take with Pick 101. But that’s pure speculation.

Using the numbers, this is the third trade that the Packers have made in the 2018 Draft that have benefitted them. They got a big haul from the Saints so New Orleans could move up from 27 to 14. They gave up surprisingly little to Seattle to move back up to 18. And now they get a net positive from the Panthers to sneak  back into the Third Round. If this trend continues on Day Three, it’ll confirm that Brian Gutekunst may have a knack for the lost art of trading.
