Green Bay Packers: Five biggest NFL Draft needs
By Josh McPeak
5. Tight End
Many articles out there have this rated as a higher priority. Honestly, it just doesn’t make any sense to have it higher on the list, than right here at number five.
Graham is a huge addition to the tight end position. He’s honestly a wide receiver playing tight end and should be dangerous in the red zone with Rodgers as his quarterback.
Graham was asked to be a blocker more often than a pass catcher in Seattle. I don’t think Green Bay will do the same.
Lance Kendricks didn’t live up to the hope in his first year with the Packers. One would imagine that has to improve early on during the 2018 NFL season. Especially, with the departure of Rodgers.
Still, if Kendricks doesn’t pick up his game, this could become a very important position. A curious one though. Would the Packers lean more towards a solid blocking tight end or go out and get another big play target?
If the Packers don’t reach early, there are some good options later on. Wisconsin’s own Troy Fumagalli is an interesting story. He had his left index finger amputated after birth. However, he still went on to have 135 career receptions with the Badgers. Not the most athletic guy in the world, but the Packers don’t necessarily need an athletic guy to pair with Graham.
Dalton Schultz from Stanford could be another great tight end product the school has produced over the last several years. Schultz would be a great short yardage target as well as an excellent blocker.
The Packers will more than likely take a tight end in this year’s draft, but still, it isn’t a desperate need at this point. With that said, it’s also hard not to see a few scenarios down the road changing that.
