Round 1, No. 14: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

Don’t get me wrong, Da’Ron Payne is a fine player out of Alabama and probably even has a few Pro Bowl appearances in him. However, defensive tackle isn’t anywhere near the top of the list of needs for Green Bay.

At 6-foot-2 and 311 pounds, NFL.com compares him to Ndamukong Suh without all the extracurriculars. That’s a very humbling comparison and a player any team would be thrilled to get.

He is extremely strong and can push the interior of the pocket and make the quarterback uncomfortable in the passing game. On runs, he’s even more dominant and will make an immediate positive impact for whoever drafts him.

The issue is Green Bay already signed Muhammad Wilkerson this winter and has a nice rotation with Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and others. Payne would immediately become one of the most talented on the line and turn this unit of strength into one of the best in the NFL. Unfortunately, the Packers are so weak in their other positions, they can’t afford to beef up on the interior line.
