Round 5, No. 174: Kalen Ballage, RB, Arizona State

Another special teams playmaker, Ballage is one of the better home run threats among running backs in this class. Big and fast, he is an incredibly fun player to watch in the open field. The issue is getting to that open field. His vision at times has lagged, and he’s been bottled up, hence him dropping to Day 3.

In the NFL, though, that won’t hinder him as much as he’ll likely make his biggest impact as a receiver. He caught 82 career passes at Arizona State and averaged 22 yards per kick return. Think Ty Montgomery, but taller.

From Lance Zierlein:

"Ballage looks great on the hoof and should test well at the Combine, but his lack of decisiveness and vision make it hard to envision him as a full-time RB1. Ballage can do a little of this and a little of that, but a team will need to have a clear-cut plan for how to use him. Ballage’s size and athletic ability will appeal to teams as will his ability to play on third downs and return kicks."

A couple from Matt Miller:

"Ballage is a “first off the bus” kind of guy who is an uber-athlete at the position. Ballage is either fool’s gold or a potential steal. He’ll spark many debates about traits versus production in scouting rooms. There is very little wear and tear on his frame and he is a great athlete, but a lack of impact on Saturdays will give teams pause."

If the Packers could get Pettis and Ballage in this Draft, they may have the return games locked in for the next five years.
