4. Meet your (Thon) Maker

Thon Maker has really struggled during his second year and hasn’t taken the step a lot of people predicted after his great play (by his standards) in the playoffs last year against the Toronto Raptors.

Unfortunately, his outside shot has been inconsistent, he hasn’t been able to rebound, like, at all and his slim frame has proven to be too much to overcome in the rough and tough NBA.

The good news is, we still get to see the occasional highlight like we did against the New York Knicks:

This play demonstrates a little bit of what Maker can become on defense. He begins by stepping out on the pick-and-roll and preventing the guard from dribbling past him. Then, when the ball is swung back to his man on the top of the key, he closes out and forces him off the spot. His man drives by him, but he doesn’t give up there, as he continues after the play. He ends up pinning a shot attempt against the backboard when his man drops the ball of the guy the help-defender was guarding.

It was gorgeous hustle and the type of play we needed to see more of from him this season.
