5. Derwin James, S, Florida State

Derwin James comes in at No. 5 on our list, but not because he isn’t good. In fact, he might end up being a stud, as he’s the No. 1 ranked safety in the 2018 NFL Draft according to Pro Football Focus’ Draft Guide.

He comes in at number five because even despite the loss of Morgan Burnett to the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency, the Packers don’t have a glaring need at safety.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will lock up one of the safety positions and play almost every snap (if healthy) like he always does.

And Kentrel Brice and Josh Jones have the potential to form a formidable tandem at the other safety position. Brice has exhibited great communication skills as a leader on the defense and should only get better this year. Also, by allowing Jones to solely focus on safety this season, he should be able to develop a better handle on the defensive concepts and his responsibilities

Granted, James would be better at those players at almost everything, but with all the needs in the Packers have, the safety position isn’t at or near the top-especially with their first-round pick.
