4. Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

Da’Ron Payne should almost certainly be available when the Packers draft at 14. Although it seems odd to select a defensive lineman when that is the defense’s unit of strength, sometimes it’s better to build on your strengths, especially if he’s the best player available at the time.

Payne is another interior defensive lineman for the Packers that can eat up blockers and close the pocket on the quarterback. Although he only had three sacks in college, he was nearly unblockable, especially in the National Title game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Also, at 6-foot-2 and 311 pounds, he’s a beast to move and would be very valuable to the Packers in the run game.

With a rotation that includes Kenny Clark, Mike Daniels, Muhammad Wilkerson and possibly Payne, the Packers should be able to wreak havoc and provide some much-needed pressure on the quarterback. If they’re able to do that, it might make the corners less susceptible to down the field passes.
