5. Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville

There’s been a lot made recently about the Packers’ height requirement for certain positions under Ted Thompson, but they can’t afford to be so picky for too much longer given their glaring need at cornerback.

It’s been noted Thompson wouldn’t draft a corner under 5-foot-10 1/2, and Jaire Alexander just barely misses the cut (5-foot-10 1/4). However, Alexander has proven he can hang in the NFL no matter his vertical challenges, as his speed (4.38 40-yard dash), quickness (6.71-second cone drill) and explosiveness (3.98 20-yard shuttle) all ranked near the top of his class.

It’s expected that Kevin King (if healthy) will play one of the outside corner sports and the newly acquired Tramon Williams will take the slot. Given Alexander’s height, he would most likely fill in as the other slot corner in the Packers’ nickel package, a defense that’s being run a lot more often these days.

Unfortunately, if the Packers do go with Alexander, that means they will be reaching for a player instead of going with the best player available. NFL.com has him listed as a 2nd-3rd round prospect, while Mel Kiper of ESPN has him ranked as the 20th player on his big board and second-best corner available.
