Back from a broken finger, shortstop Jean Segura is thought to be one of just a couple of players the Brewers would be most reluctant to deal.
Last month, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that GM Doug Melvin had reservations about trading either catcher Jonathan Lucroy or Segura.
“Those are two tough positions to fill,” Melvin said then. “I guess you have to be open to everything. But you’d have to be overwhelmed. We have some pretty good shortstops in the system. But they are doing well in the minors (and Segura) is doing well in the majors.”
Segura has bounced back from a rough 2014 at the plate, hitting .285/.317/.394 in 49 games this season, with six doubles, three triples, three homers and 17 RBI while stealing eight bases in nine attempts.
An All-Star in 2013, Segura slid to .246/.289/.326 a season ago.
If there is a key difference between Segura and Lucroy, it would be this—the Brewers have players such as Luis Sardinas and Hector Gomez who could step in and play at the big-league level right now and three of their top six prospects in the system—Orlando Arcia, Jake Gatewood and Gilbert Lara—are shortstops.
Segura is also arbitration eligible for the first time in 2016.
