8. Will Smith, LHP
Will Smith, the Brewers’ top left-handed option in the bullpen, is a cheap get this year—signed to a one-year renewal contract in March for $512,500. But he will be arbitration eligible next year, which will drive up the price of doing business.
A team might be interested in Smith, who has been dynamite out of the bullpen so far this season, with a 1.66 ERA and 1.015 WHIP in 21.2 innings.
But Smith had a great first half in 2014 before getting lit up like a Christmas tree down the stretch as he wilted under a workload (78 appearances) that he had never approached before.
If the Brewers were to deal Smith, it would have to be for an attractive package of prospects, but his name has also never surfaced among the players thought to be untouchable.
Personally, I’d like to see the 25-year-old groomed as a future closer, but Doug Melvin may have other plans.
