Matt Garza hasn’t pitched quite as poorly as Lohse, but 4-7 with a 4.80 ERA and 11 home runs allowed in 75 innings isn’t exactly screaming that he’s a guy a contender has to go out and grab.
He’s been down this road before—the Texas Rangers took a shot on Garza in 2013, giving up four prospects for what turned out to be a half-season rental.
But Garza wasn’t great for Texas and the Rangers missed the postseason when they lost a tiebreaker to the Tampa Bay Rays.
But while Garza, 31, is younger than Lohse and is pitching better than Lohse, there is a drag on his value—two years and $25 million remaining on his contract after this season, plus the possibility of a vesting option for 2018 at another $13 million that kicks in with 110 starts over the four-year life of the deal. He has 39 so far.
Garza is another veteran with postseason experience, though, including winning ALCS MVP honors with the Rays in 2008.
