Round 6, Pick No. 213
Kennard Backman, TE, UAB
6-foot-3¼, 243 pounds
Kennard Backman was a productive tight end at UAB—a school that scrapped its football program at the end of last season. He had 39 receptions for 399 yards and three touchdowns as a senior.
He was the only former Blazer to be drafted and, as such, might be the last.
NFL.com said he shows agility in the seam and can adjust to poorly thrown balls, but also projected him as nothing more than an H-back because he lacks the prototypical size of a tight end.
While his blocking was also panned, Backman said that was part of the game he liked.
“Oh yeah, I like the physicality of it,” Backman told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “That’s what makes football. Especially at the professional level in the NFL. … I just think it’s my nature in general. I enjoy the physicality part of the game.”
He led UAB in receiving last season and had 96 catches for 979 yards and nine touchdowns as a four-year starter at the position for the Blazers.
