Round 5, Pick No. 147
Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA
6-foot-3¼, 226 pounds
As previously mentioned, the Packers traded up to get Hundley, who completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,155 yards and 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions as a junior last year.
He also rushed for 644 yards and 10 touchdowns.
For his career, he threw for 9.966 yards on 67.6 percent completions, with 75 touchdowns and 25 picks, while also running for 30 touchdowns and 1,747 yards.
But there were concerns about his mobility in the pocket and his accuracy. Two scouts that the Green Bay Press-Gazette talked to about Hundley were sharply divided on his future.
“Very poised in the pocket,” one scout said. “I like that he’s a dual threat guy, extremely athletic. Here’s a guy that didn’t have a lot of wide receivers to throw to, he would tuck and go too quick sometimes.
“At the next level with the right receivers to throw to I think he has a chance.
“He throws a good ball, sticks it on the receivers, he can throw to an area and work the receiver open. There’s something about this kid I like.”
That scout had Hundley ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in the draft class, behind the top two picks, Jameis Winston of Florida State and Marcus Mariota of Oregon.
But the other scout wasn’t so bullish.
“I’m not jacked about (Hundley),” the second scout said. “I think he’s kind of one of those height-weight-speed guys that looks good, talks good, everything’s rosy, the whole exterior is great. Then when it comes down to having the (guts) to make a real play when it’s tight, I don’t know. I just didn’t feel that part of his game.”
Hundley said his drop from his projected second- or third-round stock will motivate him.
“I’m coming in to work and be the best quarterback I can be, but like I said, I have a chip on my shoulder and I’m ready to work,” Hundley told the Press-Gazette.
