Brewers 2000-03

Richie Sexson came to the Brewers as part of a large deal with the Cleveland Indians a few days before the non-waiver trade deadline in July 2000, coming over with right-handers Kane Davis and Paul Rigdon in exchange for closer Bob Wickman and right-handers Jason Bere and Steve Woodard. The Brewers later acquired infielder Marco Scutaro.

Sexson emerged as a feared slugger with the Brewers, earning two All-Star trips and bashing 45 home runs in both 2001 and 2003.

He was second in the NL in home runs in 2003 and sixth in 2005, as well as fourth in the NL in total bases and RBI in 2003. Sexson was ninth in the NL in RBI in 2001.

But the big slugger was also a big swinger, finishing second in strikeouts in 2001 and fourth in 2003.

In December 2003, Sexson was dealt with left-hander Shane Nance to the Arizona Diamondbacks for first baseman Lyle Overbay, catcher Chad Moeller, infielders Craig Counsell and Junior Spivey and left-handers Chris Capuano and Jorge De La Rosa, with Milwaukee later sending outfielder Noochie Varner to Arizona.

Sexson signed as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners in December 2004 and after he was released in July 2008, he signed with the New York Yankees. He retired after his release in August 2008.

He was originally a 24th-round pick by the Indians out of Prairie High School in Brush Prairie, Wash., in the 1993 amateur draft and debuted with Cleveland in September 1997.

Here are Sexson’s statistics from his four seasons with the Brewers:
