3 quarterbacks among Green Bay Packers’ final 53

The Green Bay Packers kept three quarterbacks—starter Aaron Rodgers as well as backups Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien—while cutting 18 players and putting four more on injured reserve Saturday to get down to the league-mandated 53-man roster by 3 p.m. Central.

Headed to injured reserve are tackle Aaron Adams (knee), linebacker Nate Palmer (knee), tight end Jake Stoneburner (ankle) and defensive tackle Khyri Thornton (undisclosed).

The cuts included:

That list means that undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Jayrone Elliott made the squad after recording five sacks in the preseason. Mike Pennel, the defensive tackle out of Colorado State-Pueblo who was brought in as an undrafted rookie, also made the final roster.

Seventh-round draft pick Jeff Janis out of Division II Saginaw Valley State also found his way onto the final roster, as the Packers kept five wide receivers—Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Jarrett Boykin, second-round pick Davante Adams and Janis.

Sixth-round pick Demetri Goodson, the former Gonzaga basketball player who played three years of football at Baylor, stuck at cornerback, and—despite a less-than-stellar showing in camp—linebacker Carl Bradford, a fourth-round pick, also made the final roster.

Keeping three quarterbacks contradicted a report from Rob Demovsky of earlier Saturday that indicated the Pack would keep either Flynn or Tolzien, but not both.

Meanwhile, the New England Patriots cut defensive end Jerel Worthy on Saturday, meaning the Packers will receive no compensation in the Aug. 12 trade that sent Worthy to New England.

Worthy had to meet two conditions in order for the Packers to receive what was thought to be a seventh-round draft pick: He had to pass his physical (yes) and make the final 53-man roster (not so much).
