It’s the end of the preseason, a game considered a throwaway by many fans, but there are still some important factors. Here are five things to watch for the Packers:
Rookie center Corey Linsley won’t get any live action with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but he’s the No. 1 center with Tretter out for up to six weeks with a knee injury. Linsley will get lots of playing time against the Chiefs, but depending on what coach Mike McCarthy does with the starters, it may not involve a lot of that playing time working with the No. 1 offensive line.
Sam Barrington can make some inroads into unseating Brad Jones at inside linebacker with a strong performance against Kansas City. Barrington and Jamari Lattimore are in a fight for the backup role, but Barrington is considered the more instinctive of the two and could earn the dime linebacker job and maybe a starting spot for the season opener in Seattle if Jones isn’t healthy.
Runback auditions will continue on punts and kickoffs, with the Packers set to try Davante Adams, Jeff Janis and Kevin Dorsey on returns.
At the nose tackle position, third-round pick Khyri Thornton will get one more chance to impress after a hugely disappointing preseason, during which he has fallen behind undrafted free agent Mike Pennel on the depth chart. With Raji out for the year, veteran Letroy Guion may finally get some playing time as he comes back from a hamstring injury that had him on the non-football injury list for much of camp.
