Top Picks Jacob Gatewood, Monte Harrison Sign With Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers rolled the dice on Friday when they drafted a couple of high-school prospects whose stock fell over concerns they might not sign.

Well, they did, and the Brewers landed a pair of new additions who were ranked in the top 25 prospects heading into the MLB first-year player draft when supplemental first-round pick Jacob Gatewood, taken No. 41 overall, and second-round selection Monte Harrison, tabbed with the 50th overall pick, agreed to terms on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Gatewood, a shortstop from Clovis, Calif., agreed to a $1.83 million bonus and Harrison, an outfielder from Lee’s Summit, Mo., will get a $1.8 million bonus.

Both of those amounts exceed the slot values to their draft positions, but the Brewers were able to entice Gatewood to give up a commitment to USC and Harrison to opt out of a scholarship deal at Nebraska, where he was going to play football and baseball.

The Brewers also finished up the final day of the draft on Saturday, making their selections in rounds 11 through 40.

Included among the picks on Saturday was 21st-round selection Donnie Hissa, a 6-foot-7 right-hander from Notre Dame who is originally from Iron River and pitched at Northwestern High School in Maple.
